(AP) ? One Houston firefighter remained hospitalized in critical condition Saturday, a day after a massive motel and restaurant fire killed four of his fellow firefighters.

A total of 14 were hospitalized Friday afternoon. Houston Fire Department spokesman Jay Evans said Saturday that other injured firefighters had been released over night, but he did not have a precise count.

Among the four killed were veterans of the department and a newcomer just a month out of the academy.

The fire broke out at a restaurant connected to the Southwest Inn along a busy freeway, and was the deadliest in the 118-year history of the department. Three firefighters died at the scene, while the fourth died at a hospital, according to the mayor's office and a medical examiner.

One of the dead is 29-year-old Robert Garner. His father, Jerry Veuleman, told the Houston Chronicle (http://bit.ly/1aMsrEe ) that Garner was proud of his work and had set his sights on becoming a firefighter after leaving the military. He joined the department in 2010.

"'Use your training. Don't be a hero. God will look after you,' " Veuleman recalled telling him. "God chose it was time to take Robert and the other firefighters. We are sorry, but we are also blessed."

The others who died were: 35-year-old Capt. Matthew Renaud, an 11-year veteran of the department; 41-year-old Robert Bebee, who joined almost 12 years ago; and 24-year-old rookie firefighter Anne Sullivan. She had graduated from the training academy in April.

Fire officials said they took a high risk in aggressively fighting the fire because they believed people were inside the motel. When a portion of the building collapsed, the firefighters were trapped.

In 1953 and 2000, two Houston firefighters were killed in a single fire. Three firefighters died in 1929 when a train slammed broadside into their engine.

Political scholar says religious freedom unites society - Patheos

Washington D.C., Jun 1, 2013 / 04:12 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Through respect and healthy debate, society can find a balance in respecting the rule of law while accommodating the religious beliefs of different groups, said political scientist William Galston.

?Religious liberty belongs to no party, no ideology, no creed: it is our common property and our shared inheritance,? he explained in a May 30 address.

Galston gave the speech upon being honored at the National Religious Freedom Award Dinner in Washington, D.C. The May 30 event was sponsored by the Ethics and Public Policy Center?s American Religious Freedom Program.

Currently a scholar at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., Galston has participated in six presidential campaigns. He also teaches at the University of Maryland and previously served as the director of the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy, as well as an advisor to a number of organizations focused on public policy and the good of society.

He received the 2013 National Religious Freedom Award at the event for his leadership in helping to pass the Religious Freedom Restoration Act during his time as an advisor for President Bill Clinton.

The act, signed into law by Clinton 20 years ago, prohibits the government from substantially burdening a person?s free exercise of religion unless doing so is necessary to further a compelling government interest and is the least restrictive way to do so.

Galston reflected upon his memories surrounding the passage of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, saying that ?President Clinton knew what he was doing when he pushed for and then signed? the act.

He noted that the law passed nearly unanimously in the House of Representatives and the Senate following a ?misguided Supreme Court decision? that threatened religious liberty. In the former president?s words, the goal of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act was to encourage ?everybody to do what they believe is the right thing to do,? relayed Galston.

?Religious liberty must not be another weapon in or victim of the cultural battles that define and oftentimes disfigure our politics,? he warned. ?It must become an isle of unity in a sea of perdition.?

However, because ?faiths diverge not only on points of theology and ritual, but also in their consequences for public policy,? he observed, there will always be challenges in striving towards a society where all can practice their faith freely.

These differing conceptions of the good must not be minimized, he explained, and society must realize that religious freedom is not absolute, but that there are some boundaries surrounding the acts which a society finds impermissible.

However, Galston emphasized, society must offer basic accommodations, or else ?we ensure nothing but endless conflict.?

?We are arguing then about the kinds of considerations? needed for religious practice, a subject upon which people of good will can reasonably disagree, he said, adding that discussions concerning religious freedom must therefore incorporate an element of compromise from all parties.

?There are ways of conducting this necessary and unavoidable argument that strengthen society, and others that weaken it,? he said, cautioning against aggressive political battles.

Instead, Galston suggested that ?by regarding and treating those with whom we disagree as fellow seekers after justice and truth, we make it more likely that they will seek justice and truth rather than dominion.?

?In the heat of the moment, let us allow the cooler voice of reason and the quieter voice of conscience to be heard,? he said of the compromises and accommodations needed to protect religious liberty.

3 Reasons Why You Should Stop Yo-Yo Dieting ... - Fitness Health

May 31, 2013 ? Posted by Rene in Body Health, Featured, Nutrition ? Tags: diet, food, nutrition, weightloss ? 0 comments ?

?

Do you go through periods of severe calorie restriction followed by binges where you?ll eat anything within reach? If you were to chart your weight over the last five years, would the graph look similar to a great new roller coaster ride, complete with high peaks and deep valleys?

If you answered yes to both of these questions, then you are probably a yo-yo dieter. Your eating patterns (and, subsequently your weight) fluctuate quite a bit based upon which stage you?re in ? the restriction phase or the ?I?m going to eat until I can?t eat anymore? phase.

While it?s great that you are still trying to achieve complete and total health, you?re likely doing your body more harm than good by eating in this way. In fact, here are three reasons you should do everything you can to kick the yo-yo dieting habit today:

You gain weight more quickly and easily. When you restrict your food intake, your body slows its metabolism in an attempt to conserve energy because it thinks that you?re starving. So, when you follow these periods of eating very little with food binges, your body is going to want to store as much of it as it can in case the food supply becomes limited again. This allows you to gain weight at supersonic speed, which defies everything you?re trying to do.

It?s harmful to your motivation. Every time you ?fail? at losing weight and keeping it off, you lose confidence in your ability to reach your goals and your drive to continue the fight dwindles. Your mind essentially says that you?re not capable of achieving weight loss, which can dampen your spirit and cause you to give up and quit trying to achieve everything you want to achieve.

It puts your health into jeopardy. Several studies have shown that yo-yo dieting likely weakens your immune system, opening you up to catch whatever bug is going around. Add that to the increased risks of diseases (such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes) that you have when you?re overweight, and your health can take quite a hit.

Instead of depriving yourself and trying to reach your goals in as little time as possible, focus more on what healthy habits you can sustain day in and day out for the rest of your life. Not only will your weight even out and health likely improve, so too will your attitude.

It?s time to cut the string and end your battle with your weight once and for all. You deserve it for all your years of hard work and suffering, don?t you think?

Cicada Time-Lapse Video By Samuel Orr Makes Insects Look Beautiful

A good piece of art makes you appreciate what it means to be alive, and Indiana-based cinematographer Samuel Orr's spectacular short film about cicadas does just that.

In order to make the video, Orr, a 42-year-old natural history filmmaker and time-lapse photographer, told The Huffington Post he's spent the past six years filming more than 200 hours of cicadas in various stages of their life cycles in a handful of midwestern states.

The effect is nothing short of amazing.

By using a series of still photos to piece together time-lapse sequences of the cicadas shedding their shells, Orr shows the oddly beautiful but ultimately tragic lives of cicadas, which live for up to 17 years underground in order to spend a brief six weeks in the open air before perishing. The footage is set to powerful music by composer Dexter Britain.

As The Atlantic's Alexis Madrigal points out, to watch the cicadas' wings unfurl (around the 2:20-minute mark) is to see one of the glories of evolution.

Orr, who filmed through a microscope to get some of the close-up shots, hopes to make an hour-long documentary with his footage; the video above is just a preview. (He's started a Kickstarter page to raise $20,000 for the project.)
