ATLANTA (AP) ? A government survey shows more teens are now smoking pot than cigarettes.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that 23 percent of high school students said they recently smoked marijuana, while 18 percent said they had puffed cigarettes. The survey asked teens about a variety of risky behaviors.
For decades, the number of teens who smoke has been on the decline. Marijuana use has fluctuated, and recently rose. At times, pot and cigarette smoking were about the same level, but last year marked the first time marijuana use was clearly greater.
An earlier survey by the University of Michigan also found that pot smoking was higher. A Michigan expert said teens today apparently see marijuana as less dangerous than cigarettes.

Surrounded by fellow teachers, administrators, friends, family and community leaders, a surprised Winter Park High School Teacher?Meg Pietkiewicz?on June 7 learned she had won the health and fitness challenge introduced by Dr. Mehmet Oz as part of the launch of the Healthy Central Florida (HCF) initiative in February in Winter Park.
Her prize is an all-expense paid trip for two to New York City to participate in a live filming of the Dr. Oz show.
Ms. Pietkiewicz, a popular marketing teacher at the school, has been successful in her own quest for better health, but she also inspired faculty, students and family to join her on the journey.
Her journey began more than 90 days ago when she attended the kickoff of Healthy Central Florida, an initiative founded by Florida Hospital and the Winter Park Health Foundation to make Central Florida the healthiest community in the nation, beginning with Winter Park, Maitland and Eatonville.
At the kickoff, Dr. Oz delivered the keynote address and urged community leaders to make healthy changes in the places where people live, learn, work and play to help make the healthy choice the easy choice.
He also challenged residents to take a 3:30:3 Pledge to get active three times a week, for 30 minutes a day for the next three months, and hundreds did. Those who successfully completed the challenge were eligible to compete for a trip to New York City to sit in on the filming of the Dr. Oz show.
Of all the entries, the essay from Ms. Pietkiewicz stood out because she was able to create a healthier environment at home, school and the community. ?She also brought to life a key Healthy Central Florida principle, that of making getting healthy fun!?? said Jill Hamilton Buss, Executive Director, Healthy Central Florida.
Ms. Pietkiewicz?s pledge was to walk her dogs 30 minutes a day twice a day and to ride her horse three times a week for an hour. The pledge, she said was easy to keep because she loves getting out with her animals.
She lost 12 pounds in the process and inspired her husband to get back to golfing and walking. She also started cooking healthier meals and tried to shop the perimeter of the grocery store as Dr. Oz suggested at the HCF launch event.
At work, she recognized fellow staff members could use an after-school exercise program to relieve stress and improve fitness. She found a leader for the program and it was held once a week and included nutrition information and then exercise. ?The leader introduced us to Zumba (which we quickly realized was hard work but a lot of fun), circuit training, interval training and the dreaded band workout,? she said. The combined group lost just over 60 pounds during a 10-week period.
Ms. Pietkiewicz also has been working with her WPHS marketing class students to develop a program called Live.Life.Healthy which will focus on teen fitness, nutrition awareness and clean living. She plans to incorporate the 3:30:3 Pledge into the campaign and get students to participate beginning this fall.
?While we had many excellent entries and have continued to hear success stories from dozens of people who?ve taken the pledge, Ms. Pietkiewicz was our clear and unanimous winner,? said Hamilton Buss.? ?She exemplifies all that Healthy Central Florida stands for ? getting people connected and having fun, moving more, eating healthier and enjoying active, energized lives!?
Healthy Central Florida is using evidence-based strategies, and research supports using a pledge to change behavior.? Making a commitment and making it public helps people be accountable for change.? Everyone is encouraged to take the pledge and can find it along with other information at www.HealthyCentralFlorida.org.

WARSAW (Reuters) - When John Godson first arrived in Poland from Nigeria 20 years ago, he was spat on in the street and, like many African immigrants at the time, beaten up simply for being black.
Now a member of parliament, Godson says his fellow Poles have changed for the better and complains some media reports in the run-up to the Euro 2012 soccer championships, which start on Friday, may mislead visiting fans into fearing rampant racism.
He dismissed as "one-sided" a British TV film documenting racist and anti-Semitic abuse and violence at stadiums in co-hosts Poland and Ukraine which received far more coverage in Poland, most of it hostile or defensive, than it had in Britain.
"I was really saddened," Godson told Reuters. "It ... does not reflect my own experience," he added, arguing the BBC had failed to reflect progress against intolerance that Poland has made since it emerged in 1990 from a half century of repressive domination by first Nazi Germany and then Soviet Communists.
"It is not that people are racist, they simply have not been exposed to other cultures," said Godson, a university teacher who is among just a couple of thousand Poles of African descent.
"As Poles get to know other people, this is getting steadily better, although we still have some way to go."
Racist abuse by Polish crowds has been a concern for black players and for Euro 2012 tournament organizers. Michel Platini, head of European soccer's governing body UEFA, said on Wednesday referees could halt matches if it occurred, though he questioned whether there was more racism in Poland than his native France.
ANTI-SEMITISM
Less familiar at west European stadiums are the anti-Semitic chanting and displays by far-right groups which organizations like the Warsaw-based East Europe Monitoring Centre say are also common in Poland and which Godson said needed tackling.
"Anti-Semitism is still a problem," he said. "There are jokes about Jews. It not an institutionalized thing but it is something that is definitely present in our society.
"We have clearly not done enough in analyzing what we see happening in the stadiums."
Home to more than three million Jews on the eve of World War Two and the Holocaust largely perpetrated on Polish soil, Poland now has a Jewish community numbering in the thousands. Both its postwar Communist rulers and Roman Catholic clergy who opposed them faced accusations of encouraging anti-Semitic sentiment.
Today, the word "Jew" is still heard as a term of abuse by non-Jewish Poles against each other, not only in stadiums.
The U.S.-based Anti-Defamation League, which has praised efforts by democratic Polish leaders, found in a survey this year of European countries that nearly half of Poles still held anti-Semitic views - fewer than in Hungary or Spain, but double or more the level it recorded in Germany, France or Britain.
SOCCER VIOLENCE
The furious response from officials to last week's BBC documentary about its soccer hooligans was indicative of how sensitive Poland is to any blemish on its image as a thriving, open society within the European Union, an image that hosting Euro 2012 is meant to enhance.
Anxious to protect the benefits in tourism, trade and international prestige that spending 20 billion euros ($25 billion) on stadiums, transport and other infrastructure might bring, Poland's government is also anxious to clamp down not just on verbal abuse but violence around soccer.
A year ago, pitched battles that drew in not just fans and police but also players and journalists marred the national cup final and prompted Prime Minister Donald Tusk to promise a clampdown during his successful parliamentary election campaign.
Police have arrested suspected ringleaders among hard-core supporters groups and have invested in an already heavily armed riot squad. Ticket prices that are high by local standards may keep some Polish hooligans out of the stadiums. But the presence of rival foreign fans around the games could mean trouble.
Next week, the national team plays a first-round match against historic adversary Russia, a tie that Wojciech Wisniewski, a prominent member of the fan club for leading Polish team Legia Warsaw, sees as a flashpoint: "The Russians are loud, they are provocative," he said. "It depends how the authorities approach it, but it is definitely a problem."
Many see the roots of soccer violence and the xenophobia that goes with it in Poland's relative poverty compared to its western EU neighbors. Despite resisting the global economic downturn better than most - it is the only EU state to record consistent growth since 2008 - Poland remains the bloc's fifth poorest. Per capita annual income is less than 10,000 euros.
"In the West, the dominant reaction to the economic crisis is a turn to the left, as we are seeing for example in Greece," said Michal Bilewicz, who studies prejudice at Warsaw University. "In Poland or Hungary, our way of dealing with material hardship is to blame someone 'foreign'.
"For this reason the right is gaining support and the left is struggling to reach voters."
Godson, however, points to reasons for hope in his election to parliament last year in Lodz - a city where most people rarely see a non-European face and where the intense rivalry between fans of the two main soccer clubs is famously marked by anti-Semitic taunts, even though few Jews now live there.
"Race was not an issue in my election," Godson said.
"People voted for me because I was a good councilor and they could see that I had a strong community conscience and was prepared to help people," he added.
"Poland is a very friendly, hospitable place. I feel more at home here than I do in the West." ($1 = 0.8001 euros)

>>> hi, everyone. i'm tamron hall . the mad dash for campaign cash. at this hour president obama is wrapping up his two-day fundraising push in california while mitt romney raising cash in missouri. it comes with news that mitt romney and the rnc outraised the president and democrats. the romney campaign reports bringing in nearly $77 million last month. compared with team obama 's $60 million. politico reports, this is the first month when we've had a direct hard dollar comparison between obama and romney on fundraising . and the results cast an even darker shadow on an already disappointing week for democrats. this morning, dnc chair woman spoke with thomas roberts and insisted democrats are doing just fine.
>> it's not really surprising that the republicans were able to pull down a lot of low hanging fruit. they just formed the romney campaign and the rnc just form their joint fundraising committee. we're very comfortable and confident that we're thrilled the fundraising that came in this month for us are on track to have the resources that we need.
>> let's bring in nbc news political reporter mark murray . let's get behind the story. why is the rnc doing, at least in the last month?
>> it is very good news for them. the reason mitt romney is doing well, he just became the republican nominee which allows him to combine a fundraising committee with the republican national committee . and even some state republican parties so when mitt romney has a big fund-raiser, he can collect up to $75,000 from people. and it gets distributed to these different committees. some go to the campaign. some go to the rnc. some go toward the romney victory fund . president obama has the same type of apparatus. it has been set up for more than a year. one of the reasons, you heard debbie wasserman schultz say that this is the first time that big romney donors, big republican donors can start cutting the really big five figure checks to the campaign and to those committees.
>> jim messina apparently made a video pep talk saying we need to stay focused, work hard and ignore the ups and downs . that was in response to some of the less than good news coming out. especially, of course, the most important being that jobs number. regarding the outraising of cash here, the president was or is in california. he is in nevada now. where a lot of people has come from that state alone.
>> he's been doing a lot of the fundraising with the lgbt communicate. with one of those fund-raisers last night. tamron, i think one of the bigger dynamics, you have your very big democratic donors, the people who are writing these $30,000, $50,000 checks. you have your very big republican donors. people writing the $75,000 checks. the question with the obama campaign is hoping for that its grassroots is able to provide a lot of money. where people donating $50, $100 a month. that that becomes dynamic. and actuallier is passes a lot of what you see as the low fruit from both political parties .
>> there was an article just yesterday regarding big donors. those that helped make the obama campaign so successful the first time around. some of them may be missing in action . they may certainly jump into the pot but right now the question was, where are the big bundlers?
>> that's why the grassroots operation is so big for them and why they've had so many fund-raisers where they say, hey, could you chip in $3. chip in $10. if they can get people to do that three or four or five time where those people are giving $100, $150 through the campaign, you add that list they had to some $10 million or more people. that is a lot of money. the thing to note is that we're just talking about the rnc, dnc campaign money. we're not even talking about the outside groups where republicans probably have a very, very big advantage.
>> and you're talking about of course the super pac money and debbie wasserman schultz regarded them as truly disturbing. in her words you have a handful of billionaires who are gearing up to buy the white house and that's what we're up against. a direct quote from debbie wasserman schultz regarding the super pac money coming in.
>> right now republicans have the very big super pac advantage. there are some democratic super pacs out there but republicans are hoping these outside groups are able to almost bury the obama campaign with the romney rnc money that's out there. the other thing to look at all this money, we're talking about maybe billions of dollars that are being spent on tv ads. so all that money could get canceled out at the end of the day .
>> thank you. let me bring in executive director of the national committee. thank you for joining me again. the press secretary said we knew this day would come. that was his reaction to the may fundraising numbers.
>> we absolutely expect these kinds of numbers from the romney camp. in a comparable period in 2004 , john kerry outraised george bush by a ratio of 2-1. once he had consolidated report. it is a natural bump. we also know that he has the outside super pacs that are going to continue to spend at an astronomical clip to try to misrepresent our record. we're going to contrast that with the nearly 2.2 million americans who have written checks to president obama . they will vote on doors to get the word out about all this president has accomplished and all he will do to bring change.
>> i don't want to draw a hard line . i have to make the comparison between what you just said regarding getting out the grassroots campaign with what the democrats in wisconsin were saying before the loss there, that it was grassroots. the day after scott walker won, it was 10-1, 7-1. depending on the source. so help me understand the difference. the language really sounds very similar even though we're focused on one state versus the national campaign for the president.
>> well, there's a rather stark difference. obviously what took place in wisconsin was article election. i'm sure you've seen the polling that says over 70% of wisconsin residents thought that the recall process was not the legitimate way to reprosecute the campaign from 2010 . this is an entirely different circumstance. we have an incumbent president who has spent years working up to change in this country. growing jobs in this country and a campaign at the grassroots that has both a deep infrastructure in every single one of the states and we know that has to be down to our benefit come november 6th .
>> we know the campaign is focused on drawing in, as you mentioned, new donors. getting, as one person said, they're not looking at getting the support of so-called special interests . to get those new donors in, we need them to be enthusiastic. about the campaign. we need them to get out and support this president. there's a report from the associated press. the headline is cruel june for obama . could get worse. they talk about the loss in wisconsin . last week's unemployment, the supreme court decision that could come down in june on health care . the decision on the immigration law in arizona and also, the battle to fill congresswoman gifford's house seat as well.
>> i am in washington, d.c. and i know it is the nature of this town to always be in panic and to elevate every single headline as if it is the entire narrative. june does not an entire campaign make. i can well remember working president 's campaign in 2008 and folks were on this show and others talking about how we couldn't win the primary contest, we would lose in the general campaign once sarah palin went again us in the campaign. we expect that because of the infrastructure that we've built, the animated organizers and activists that we have across this country, and the fact that this president has a real strong record to run on, and continues to call on republican leaders in congress to work with him, to continue our forward expansion on jobs to make sure that we hire teachers, firefighters and construction workers this year instead of running on the clock as republicans are wont to do.
>> thank you very much.

Green homes throughout the Chicagoland area continue to be a strong selling point as consumers are much more informed and concerned about the effects of energy-efficient homes not only on their pocketbook, but also on the environment.
The cost of green homes is a concern for many homebuilders and homeowners who may be still sitting on the fence regarding the pros and cons of green home construction.
The Alliance for Environmental Sustainability is presenting the Building Low-Cost Green Homes event on Wednesday, June 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters Facility at 4979 Indiana Avenue in Lisle. The presentation will also be held on Thursday, June 7 at Roosevelt University on 425 S. Wabash Avenue in Chicago from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. This informative continuing education event focuses on homebuilders, designers, and developers interested in building green homes.
The literature regarding building green homes is expansive and often overwhelming. There is an onslaught of information that homebuilders need to be up to date on concerning the construction of green homes and navigating through the ins and outs of energy-efficient homes is no easy task. Join Jon Sader, the former Construction Director of The Make it Right Foundation, as he discusses his paradigm (and repeatable process) for building Platinum Certified Green homes for less cost than a conventionally built home.

Never assume that simply because you don't have a major brand name behind you that you can't have achieve the success of your dreams. With a good internet marketing strategy, you can really improve your businesses success.
A good strategy is to know what your competitors are doing. It is easy to look at your competitor's sites and see what kinds of features they are using. You can get a good idea of the number of visitors they are getting, and that can help you determine how you are doing.
It is not uncommon for people to disbelieve what is written in ads. This is because advertisers have been trying to dupe the public for years. Therefore, you need to provide substantial proof that you are selling a legitimate product. Don't hesitate to use testimonials, research data, reviews, before-and-after photos - whatever support you have. Don't make any claims that you can't back up. You must take your customer's word as truthful and sincere. You should ensure that all customers are treated with honesty and respect. You can increase your success at Internet marketing by creating a viral video with tags and uploading it. In the video description, be sure to include a backlink to your website. You can significantly increase your website traffic by using this strategy.
Something you should consider when Internet marketing is that you should never spend all your money in one place. You will find that a lot of internet marketing techniques have to do with diversity, and while you don't want to spread yourself too thinly, you also want to have alternative options. Hold on to your current job until you start to make considerable profits.
Try using ad banners on your site that don't actually look like a banner. You should try your best to make them look like they are clickable links to reach more content. Banners sometimes can turn away customers, so make sure that they are well placed.
Write and publish a press release to bring new users to your website. If you can write clear, crisp and informative press releases, there are many sources available online that will publish you and release your material to certain niche markets. The is a good way to get your name out there.
There is no step-by-step recipe for Internet marketing success; it is as much an art as it is a science. You must research the online advertising methods that are effective within your industry and learn about newly designed techniques. When you design your website you must be creative, but when you look at stats you have to analyze your numbers.
Internet marketing can also facilitate companies in directing their advertising at specific population segments. This enables companies to effectively utilize advertising budgets. Another added Internet marketing bonus is seeing how the effective the advertisements can be. The Internet is the best place for smart companies to advertise.

The recommendation in Brown's revised May budget is aimed at freeing the state from reimbursing local school districts for the $250-million annual cost of the second-year science course. The state has not made any payouts to school districts since the requirement was ruled a mandate in 2005, so California owes public school systems $2.5 billion in unpaid claims.
"This is a fiscally-driven decision," said H.D. Palmer, spokesman for the state Finance Department. "We don't want to keep adding to the credit card balance we already have."But educators worry that trimming science requirements will shut out students from qualifying to attend the University of California and California State University systems, both of which require two years of the subject. UC does not plan to alter that requirement; and Cal State is unlikely to change its policy, but trustees have not yet met over the issue, according to UC and Cal State officials.
Jessica Sawko of the California Science Teachers Assn. said financially struggling school districts could be the first to cut back science courses, potentially depriving less affluent students of equal access to higher education choices.
Paul Golaszewski of the nonpartisan state legislative analyst's office, however, said the effect would probably be small. Schools offer a range of science courses despite the state's failure to reimburse them and are likely to continue doing so even if the second-year science requirement is repealed, he said.
Some local educators agree.
The Inglewood Unified School District, for instance, is in the worst financial shape of any district in Los Angeles County and the only one facing financial insolvency. But Johnny J. Young, board president and a former science teacher, is adamant that science courses will not be reduced.
"It would be educational suicide to cut back on science or math," he said. "You would lessen the chance of students going to college, especially students of color. I will never support that."
At Van Nuys High School, Principal Judith A. Vanderbok also said she would not reduce her science classes. In fact, she is considering adding earth science, marine biology and environmental science to the school's offerings, which currently include regular and Advanced Placement biology, chemistry, physics and physiology.
"We think science is the gateway to technology, and that's where the jobs are," she said. "We want our students to be prepared."
She said 95% of Van Nuys students, who are largely low-income, choose to take three years of science. Van Nuys pays for much of the teaching costs with federal funds granted to low-income schools.
Regardless of state action, L.A. Unified will stand by its recently adopted policy requiring two years of science for high school graduation, according to Jaime R. Aquino, deputy superintendent of instruction.
State Supt. of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said California should be strengthening its science instruction, not reducing it.
Only 22% of eighth-graders passed a national science test, ranking California 47th among all states, according to scores from the 2012 National Assessment of Educational Progress released in April. A statewide study of elementary schools last year found that California is failing to invest enough time, money and training to teach science well.
As business leaders sound alarms over a shortage of workers well-trained in math, science, technology and engineering, new initiatives have been launched to strengthen instruction in those disciplines, including new science activities in more than 300 after-school programs.
The proposed cutbacks in science requirements would counter those efforts, Torlakson said.
"It's a huge contradiction that a state that produced such marvels to the world in technology is not investing enough in science to prepare students to fill the jobs of the future," he said.

Q: What started the effort to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker?
A: The recall effort was born Feb. 11, 2011. That was when Walker released his plan to address a state budget shortfall that called on most public workers to pay more for health insurance and pension benefits, and, most important, give up nearly all their collective bargaining rights. The proposal set the recall fire, led to protests that lasted weeks and grew as large as 100,000 people. It motivated 14 Senate Democrats to flee the state for three weeks in a vain attempt to stop the bill. Walker signed it into law March 11 virtually unchanged from how he proposed it.
Q: Isn't this unusual? How often do governors face recalls?
A: This is the third recall election of a governor in U.S. history. The other two were successful in throwing the incumbent out of office ? against California Gov. Gray Davis in 2003 and North Dakota Gov. Lynn Frazier in 1921.
Q: If there's an effort to kick Walker out of office, does that mean his approval rating is low?
A: The recall is more a result of how divided the state is over Walker and his policies. His approval rating among Wisconsin respondents in the most recent Marquette University Law School poll was 51 percent, just 1 percentage point less than President Barack Obama's.
Q: Who's footing the bill for the recall campaigns? Taxpayers? Or someone else?
A: There has been much ado about all the campaign money flowing into Wisconsin from out of state, and for good reason. The recall election has been unlike anything seen before in Wisconsin, with at least $62 million spent by the candidates and outside groups so far. Walker was the top spender at $29 million, with Democrats including Barrett spending about $4 million. Outside groups have spent $21 million and issue ad groups that don't have to disclose their spending have put in at least $7.5 million. That, of course, is donated money. Taxpayers are anything but off the hook. The recall and a primary for it are special elections that otherwise would not be held. State elections officials estimate the cost of a statewide election to taxpayers is $9 million, for a total of $18 million.
Q: How has the economy played into the campaign? What are the candidates pledging to do to create jobs?
A: The recall may have started over collective bargaining, but the overriding issue has become job creation. Walker promised in 2010 to create 250,000 jobs over four years and he is not on pace to meet that goal. How far afield he is depends on what set of numbers are used to measure his promise. Monthly jobs figures, based on a survey of about 3.5 percent of Wisconsin employers, show job creation is flat since Walker took office. But a combination of data, including 2011 numbers derived from a more comprehensive census of employers, shows about 33,000 new jobs have been created in Walker's term.
Barrett, meanwhile, has been more vague, something Walker has used against him. Barrett has said he will adopt a comprehensive jobs agenda that emphasizes manufacturing, small business, clean energy, venture capital, high-tech and bio tech and our agricultural rural economy. He has criticized Walker for making jobs secondary to attacks on public employee unions.
Q: Is Walker the only politician on the ballot facing a recall? What about people who supported him?
A: The Walker-Barrett race is in the national spotlight for obvious reasons, but also on the ballot are recall elections for GOP Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, who faces Democrat Mahlon Mitchell, and four GOP state Senate seats. If Democrats can win any one of those seats, they will hold a majority in the Senate for the first time since 2010 and could obstruct any further advancement of Walker's agenda if he wins.
Q. If someone does not like the results, can there be another recall?
A. Wisconsin law allows for recalls of anyone who has been in office for at least a year. The winner will serve the remainder of Walker's current term, which runs through 2014. Office holders can only stand for recall once per term, so if Walker wins he will remain in office at least through 2014.
Q. Will turnout be an indicator of an outcome?
A. Turnout is key for both Walker and Barrett in a race that polls show has few undecided voters. Walker must pull strongly from Republican parts of the state, primarily in the conservative Milwaukee suburbs. Barrett needs to do well with his base in Madison and Milwaukee and keep Walker's margin of victory low in the Republican-leaning Fox Valley area around Green Bay. The election, if it's close, could be won or lost based on how well the candidates do in western Wisconsin in swing counties along the Mississippi border, as well as other swing parts of the state like in Racine County south of Milwaukee.
Q. What happens Wednesday?
A. If Walker wins the recall, little will change. He will remain governor, and Barrett will remain mayor of Milwaukee. However, if Barrett wins, Walker will remain in office for only a short time. The state elections board has just 18 days to issue a certificate declaring the election results official. When that's done, he is no longer governor.

Carrie Bow Cay is a tiny island in the Caribbean Sea, about 14 miles off the coast of Southern Belize. The island is so small?0.77 acres?that you can walk its entire perimeter in under 10 minutes. Scientists regularly visit Carrie Bow Cay to study coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass meadows, as well as the animals that live in these unique ecosystems.
When Sara Lewis and Randi Rotjan of Tufts University travel to Carrie Bow Cay, they spend most of their time underwater, examining corals. But they also wanted to make the most of their time on land, inbetween dives. So the biologists decided to study the behavior of Caribbean hermit crabs (Coenobita clypeatus), around 1,000 of which live on Carrie Bow Cay's sandy shores.
Like all hermit crabs, Caribbean hermit crabs?which are the most popular pet variety in the United States?depend on other creatures' shells for protection. Strip a hermit crab of its shell and you will see its soft, pink abdomen curled behind its head like a fern's frond. Most hermit crabs favor snail shells, although some use the shells of bivalves, like clams and scallops, and others have made do with driftwood, stones and pieces of glass or plastic bottles.
In 2009, Lewis and Rotjan surveyed the entire hermit crab population on Carrie Bow Cay. Many crabs were living shells that were a tight fit or had one too many holes. As they grow, hermit crabs must move into larger shells, so they are always on the lookout for a more spacious dwelling. And an undamaged shell is preferable to a broken one, even if the shells are the same size. Knowing this, the researchers decided to dramatically change the available hermit crab real estate on Carrie Bow Cay. They placed 20 beautifully intact shells that were a little too big for most hermit crabs at various spots around the island and watched what happened.
When a lone crab encountered one of the beautiful new shells, it immediately inspected the shelter with its legs and antennae and scooted out of its current home to try on the new shelter for size. If the new shell was a good fit, the crab claimed it. Classic hermit crab behavior. But if the new shell was too big, the crab did not scuttle away disappointed?instead, it stood by its discovery for anywhere between 15 minutes and 8 hours, waiting. This was unusual. Eventually other crabs showed up, each one trying on the shell. If the shell was also too big for the newcomers, they hung around too, sometimes forming groups as large as 20. The crabs did not gather in a random arrangement, however. Rather, they clamped onto one another in a conga line stretching from the largest to smallest animal?a behavior the biologists dubbed "piggybacking."
Only one thing could break up the chain of crabs: a Goldilocks hermit crab for whom the shell introduced by Lewis and Rotjan was just right. As soon as such a crab claimed its new home, all the crabs in queue swiftly exchanged shells in sequence. The largest crab at the front of the line seized the Goldilocks crab's abandoned shell. The second largest crab stole into the first's old shell. And so on.
No one had ever documented such well-orchestrated shell swapping before, but similar behavior was not unknown. In 1986, Ivan Chase of Stony Brook University made the first observations of hermit crabs exchanging shells in a "vacancy chain"?a term originally coined by social scientists to describe the ways that people trade coveted resources like apartments and jobs. When one person leaves, another moves in. Since then, several researchers?including Lewis and Rotjan?have studied the behavior in different hermit crab species. Some preliminary evidence suggests that other animals use vacancy chains too, including clown fish, lobsters, octopuses and some birds. As Chase explains in the June issue of Scientific American, vacancy chains are an excellent way to distribute resources: Unlike more typical competition, a single vacancy chain benefits everyone involved?each individual gets an upgrade. So it makes sense that hermit crabs and other animals have evolved sophisticated social behaviors to make the most of vacancy chains.
The orderly vacancy chain that Lewis and Rotjan observed is called a synchronous vacancy chain, which is different from an asynchronous vacancy chain in which a lone crab encounters a shell, claims it and leaves behind its old home, which is later seized by a different crab that never interacts with the first animal. As the above video makes clear, however, synchronous vacancy chains are not always civilized affairs. Sometimes crabs fight each other for the best shell or gather in violent groups. And the exchanges often happen extremely quickly. Lewis and Rotjan had to slow down the footage just to see what was happening and it is still difficult to make out: three hermit crabs crowd a large green shell; the largest claims the green shell and the other two swiftly trade up. Lewis thinks the chain would have been more orderly if the crabs were not disturbed by two biologists filming them.
"Hermit crabs really have to think about and evaluate these shell resources?these are life and death decisions," Lewis says. "They're interesting to look at from that perspective. They have greater than average crab intelligence." Lewis wonders whether hermit crabs release chemical signals to attract nearby crabs and start a vacancy chain, which is what she wants to investigate next. As soon as she finds time to return to Carrie Bow Cay.
